BRITISH AIRWAYS LIFT INTERMEDIATE CUP FOR THE SEVENTH TIME!

British Airways withheld a fierce second half fightback from a youthful Southall side to lift the Middlesex County FA's Intermediate Cup for the seventh time overall and the fourth time in just seven years before a healthy crowd of 148 at harrow Borough's "Earlsmead" ground. The first half was very evenly matched and although both sides were heavily committed, especially in the tackles, goalmouth action was at a premium.
Derek Lewis in the British Airways pulled off a couple of outstanding saves to deny Southall, preventing them from striking first blood.

While at the other end, Southall 'keeper Nick Law also made an outstanding save from a well taken British Airways free kick just before half time, to keep the score goalless.

The decisive goal came early in the second half as Lawrie Shennan converted extremely well having been put through a static Southall defence, Southall custodian Nick Law being helpless to prevent the goalbound effort from entering his goal.

Southall fought back strongly, but could not find a way through a well marshalled British Airways defence, although there were several close shaves in the Airways goalmouth.

British Airways looked to make the game safe on the break and should have done better on more than one occasion, as golden opportunities were squandered through a lack of composure in front of the Southall goal.

As the game entered a frantic finale the pace of the more youthful Southall side continually troubled the British Airways defence, but their experience and determination kept their gutsy opponents from the Middlesex County League at bay. The final whistle went with Southall still searching in vain for an equaliser as British Airways, representing the London Commercial League, held on for the win in what had been a most entertaining Intermediate Cup Final.

Guest of Honour, Middlesex County FA Councillor Colin Downey, chose British Airways defender Anthony Hall as the Man of the Match, and went on to present this award as well as medals to both sides and to the Cup Final Match Offiicials. The Match Officials were led by referee Mark Sennett, ably assisted by Paul Savva and Andrew Williams, with reserve official Paul Andrews completing the "third team" at the Intermediate Cup Final.

The evening ended with British Airways lifting the Intermediate Cup and then followed this with a most enthusiastic photo call, before the celebrations began. Commiserations though to Southall, who contributed greatly to the entertainment of an excellent Cup Final.
